Fasting the day of A’rafa

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

SubhanAllah. Fasting outside the month of Ramadhan is just not the same. This is a testimony of the fact, that Ramadhan indeed is blessed just by itself inshaAllah. May Allah سبحانه و تعالى accept our fasts of Ramadhan this year and all the years we have observed them in our lifetime.

Ramadhan 1430H evaluation

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Ramadhan is just around the corner. For some it’s already started and for others its just hours away. One thing I’d like to do this year is conduct a systematic review of myself starting Ramadhan. The goal, as with any good program, is to get better at what ever it is you are doing. So what is the aim of Ramdhan Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in Surah Al-Baqrah

Ayah 2:183

2:183 – O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (Translation from Sahih International)

The program calls for evaluation yourself at three different stages,

  • Stage 1: Before the start of Ramadhan
  • Stage 2: Right after Ramadhan. This will help gauge your performance, increase (inshaAllah) or decrease.
  • Stage 3: Finally, about 30 days after the end of Ramadhan. This should help evaluate
    • if  you truly did benefit from Ramadhan
    • or did you go back to your pre-Ramadhan level
    • or did your performance degrade
Question Now After Ramadhan 30 days after Ramadhan
Do I go to the masjid for every prayer?
For how many prayers do I go to the masjid?
Do I read The Quran everyday?
How many ayah of The Quran do I read everyday?
Do I get up for Qiyam-al-layl everyday?
How many nights in a week do I pray Qiyam-al-layl?
How long is my Qiyam-al-layl?
Have I memorized any surahs?
How many surahs have I memorized?
How often in a week/month do I donate?
Do I know any duas?
How many duas have I memorized?

This is not a comprehensive list of questions by any means. Its to give you an idea of what you can work around with. Go ahead create one for yourself. May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala give us the full blessings of this coming month of Ramadhan, Ameen.
